Providence is the capital of the state of Rhode Island. It was founded by Roger Williams in 1636. The city is situated at the mouth of the Providence River at the head of Narragansett Bay. It's home to Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design, whose RISD Museum displays American art and silver. Nearby, 18th- and 19th-century homes line the streets of College Hill.
